The Inspiration Behind Maliko’s Designs

In an interview with Vanity Teen, Omaliko dove into the inspiration behind one of his latest collections, “A Stitch in Time.” “I have always been inspired by my grandmother’s love and lifestyle towards the significance of time. She attached so much intent to the values that came with time, and how important it was for things to be done before, or at the exact time. Procrastination was the villain in her story, and of course the heroes/heroine were the success stories that came with getting things done as at when due,” says Omaliko. Each individual material of yarn and leather became a representation for the trouble that intertwines into our life when we procrastinate, while the crochet pattern found in the design can be seen as the solution of what happens when time management and togetherness is curated. From the Isabel Round Heel Slip on Sandal, to the Beejay Handwoven Slippers, or the Chi Sandals, the collection is filled with vibrant and trendy colours as a medium of relevance.

The Art of Handcrafted Footwear: Maliko’s Production Process

Also, shared by Ebuka Omaliko’s mentor, Parminder Vir Obe, she details the intricate and meticulous process behind each unique shoe collection. The production process starts with Ebuka sketching his shoe design and choosing colours, materials, and techniques. He collaborates with artisans to refine the idea before creating a prototype. A shoe last, or mold, is made and adjusted for the perfect fit. The prototype then moves through different artisans, such as crochet artists, weavers, woodcarvers, and leather workers, each adding their craft to the design.

Materials are sourced locally, with leather sustainably obtained from second-hand retailers in Mushin, Lagos. Once all parts are ready, the shoe is assembled and finalised. The finished sample is photographed, and a lookbook with product details is sent to retailers who place orders. All Maliko pieces are made-to-order, ensuring quality and sustainability. Maliko’s Commitment to Slow Fashion & Sustainable Craftsmanship

Maliko’s commitment to slow-fashion set’s the brand apart from its abundance of fast-fashion competitors. Each collection is designed with longevity in mind, emphasising durability and timeless style over short-lived trends. This approach not only benefits the environment but offers customers investment-worthy pieces that stand the test of time. Ensuring that Omaliko’s pieces stand the test of time is no simple task. It demands a vision that goes beyond short-lived trends, focusing instead on a timeless aesthetic that remains relevant for years to come.

Achieving this level of durability and sophistication requires extensive research, not just in refining the design but also in sourcing high-quality, sustainable materials that enhance longevity. Every detail, from the structural integrity of the shoe to the choice of ethically obtained fabrics and leathers, is carefully considered to create footwear that balances style, comfort, and durability. This diligent process ensures that each piece is not only fashionable but also a lasting investment. Whether worn on the streets of Lagos, Paris, or New York, its designs resonate with individuals who appreciate quality craftsmanship and cultural storytelling.
